GEM Xpert EMERGENCY

This training is for experts in elderly patients in emergency situations, initial contact in the hospital, emergency admissions, and ultimately the assessment and management of acutely ill elderly patients. Elderly patients who present to the hospital as an emergency often present with unknown or previously undetected risks. Early detection of risks and dysfunctions is crucial for an optimal clinical course with the best possible outcome.

What are these risks?
The stability of geriatric patients depends largely on their cognitive performance and functional abilities (mobility, autonomy, control). However, other risks such as dysphagia, malnutrition, and dehydration can also be identified through training. Recognizing these requires specialized training. GEM Xperts learn precisely this: observe, touch, and question. The theoretical component offered here is the WEP ACADEMY's structured geriatric curriculum (SGCU), specifically designed to identify these functional impairments. After working through this theory, participants are trained in the practical implementation, use, and application of the GEM screening.

The entire GEM Xpert training is based on Dr. Weinrebe's KLANG module. KLANG stands for cognition, locomotion, autonomy, nutrition, and overall condition. This results in structured training in acute geriatric topics that continually establish and complement daily practice. GEM Xpert Emergency is capable of initiating and implementing a comprehensive assessment, evaluation, and documentation of geriatric patients in 3-5 minutes. Recommendations for the care of this patient group in the emergency room are also integrated.
